Plainfield South High School’s “So…You Want to Major in Music!” event is benefiting from its new virtual setting.
The program, in its sixth year, invites PSHS band graduates to answer questions from 8th-12th graders about making the most of their high school music choices to prepare for a college music major, said PSHS Band Director Jerrod Cook.
This year’s event, on Thursday, November 12, 2020, will be held virtually via Zoom, he said.
“In a non-pandemic year, our alumni that have, or are, pursuing a music career are not usually available on a weeknight to travel back to Plainfield,” Cook said, “but because it is remote this year, I could reach out to any alumni, regardless of where they live.”
Six alums, who graduated between 2004 and 2019, are scheduled to attend.
The graduates will represent the field of music in education, performance, business, composition, and therapy.
A parent of a college music major also will be on hand to answer questions, Cook said.
Music is one of the only college majors that requires its students have a high level of expertise coming into college, he said.
Many schools require students audition for a spot in their school of music, Cook said.
“Unless you have gone through this process, you are likely unaware of this aspect of pursuing music and without this information students may not be as prepared as they need to be,” Cook said.
